ONE DAY LEFT!!!
(Disclaimer: I’m not trying to sound pretentious or snobby or anything and I apologise if I do)
I have a passion for photography and I would say (and I’ve been told) that I am a good photographer, despite me still being a teenager. I hate it when people think that just taking an ‘artsy’ picture (aka a close-up picture of a flower on an iPhone) is photography. It isn’t. It’s taking a picture of a flower.
I also hate how if people own a DSLR, they automatically think they’re a photographer. You’re not. When I first got my DSLR (same model shown) I didn’t know much about photography or my camera and because of it, my pictures were average and I was using auto modes. But with time I learnt how to use my camera and take pictures and now I take quite good photos (below is an example of my ‘photography in 2011’, when I got my camera and my photography now).
The camera is the same (Canon 600D) and neither were edited at all but that’s beside the point. Photography is more than taking pictures, you do not have to have a fancy camera to be a good photographer (if you don’t believe me, look up Pro Photographer Cheap Camera Challenge on DigitalRev on YouTube)
So I understand if your ‘passion’ is photography but if you cannot be bothered to understand and learn how to take pictures (even the professions start somewhere) then your passion isn’t really photography. You may like the whole ‘Yes, I’m into photography’ but if you do not learn and practise whether it be with a DSLR or a camera phone then you’re not into photography.
When I started getting into photography, I had no idea what ISO was or whether shutter speed was important and I was clueless about Aperture (and it was only until recently where I finally realised that the lower the f number, the blurrier the background) but now I am quite knowledgeable about it.
Lastly, before my TL;DR, I get a lot of questions from people who want to get into photography and want a Canon DSLR and I tell them that the camera body isn’t the most important thing. The lenses are. (I do want to upgrade my 600D though because I’ve reached the ISO and shutter speed limitations and the noise I get from pictures annoys me so I’m looking at getting the 70D because of the ISO of 12800). And so I tell them to get the cheapest and then experiment with lenses and photography until you find what you love (personally for me it’s wildlife and portraits) and then learn.
Also, yes you can have natural talent but unless you are a prodigy (and even then), you can always get better. Remember.no baby is born saying ‘I personally prefer a camera that can handle a higher ISO than a lens with a lower aperture’.
Again, sorry if I seem really tooting my own horn or being really snobby
TL;DR: ‘Photographers’ (or people with a passion for photography) are not just people who own a DSLR or take close-ups of flowers, photography needs to be learnt and if these people can’t be bothered to learn, then they don’t have a passion for it. They have a passion for the label.
FINALLY this doesn’t just apply to photography but anything skills based
